03/31/2004 Entry: "Thank you for the days..."
Which is the odd one out?
a) Chinese New Year
b) St Patrick's Day
c) Hogmanay
d) St George's Day
If you answered (d) you are correct. St George's Day (April 23rd - also Shakespeare's birth- and death-day) is, seemingly, the only date that can't be celebrated in England.
It doesn't seem to matter that ol' Geo's the patron saint of our country. I remember reading stories in recent years of people being told to remove the national flag for fear of "inciting racial hatred" or "reprisals".
"Inciting racial hatred"? How? What would be the reaction of the average USA-ian if Gee Dubya told them to strike the Stars & Stripes? Not that I'm a fan of Bush, you understand. Hell, I'm with Michael Moore on that score.
It truly is a sad state of affairs when an Englishman can't celebrate his national day.
It's even worse when I start to agree with Garry Bushell.

fwiw mate, I agree. "let's hear it for st. george!" yelled down oxford street would probably get you some funny looks, and approval from the nearest neo-nazi numbnuts.
